RT Journal Article SR Electronic T1 The usefulness of counting `heat-affected' red cells as a guide to the risk of the later disappearance of red cells after burns JF Journal of Clinical Pathology JO J Clin Pathol FD BMJ Publishing Group Ltd and Association of Clinical Pathologists SP 295 OP 297 DO 10.1136/jcp.14.3.295 VO 14 IS 3 A1 Topley, Elizabeth YR 1961 UL http://jcp.bmj.com/content/14/3/295.abstract AB The technique for counting heat-affected red cells (`microcytes') in the head of the blood film taken from patients on admission is described. Although crude, it does appear to increase the precision with which it is possible to predict the disappearance of red cells in the first 24 hours after a burn, and therefore to decide those cases in which 51Cr red cell volume estimates may be clinically useful.
